In the middle of an on-air interview with Yahoo! in 2015, Skrillex's phone rang. "It's Chris," Couric noted.
"Oh, Marshmello," Skrillex replied before picking up the phone andPut DJ producer Marshmello on speakers.
The interaction sparked debate about the identity of the masked newcomer, who had only started releasing music online for free three months earlier. Since then, social media detectives and EDM fans have come to believe that Marshmello is a pseudonym of Chris Comstock aka Dotcom, a DJ producer in the same management as Marshmello.Forbesnow they can conclusively report that they are the same person.

The identity of the man in the white mask can be traced through music licensing manager BMI, where Marshmello is registered as a songwriter and performer. The BMI's public database links pseudonyms with real names, i.e. searchmalvaviscothe whyComstockunder his real name produced the same results and proved that Comstock is Marshmello.

But just 12 hours after emailing Marshmello management asking for comments with links to the BMI database showing the same results for Comstock and Marshmello, Comstock was removed from the BMI website. A search for Comstock as the composer yielded no results. A track by Borgore and Dotcom, "Nope", previously surfaced in searches for Comstock and his alias Marshmello, has also been removed from the online playlist. Fortunately, the screenshots taken earlier record the credits. (As of this morning, Comstock has resurfaced on the BMI website with a single credit for "No.")

Additional evidence comes from his holding company, Marshmello Creative, LLC. Founded in Delaware in August 2015, the company's only publicly traded executive is Christopher Comstock. Comstock is also listed as the sole administrator of Dotcom Music, LLC, the organization associated with his former nickname.
Marshmello's identity has also been confirmedForbesby several industry experts who spoke on condition of anonymity. One said: "It's absolutely the same guy."
Marshmello's identity has been an open secret in the EDM community for some time. But the pseudonym served as a useful marketing tool for the artist, who had previously tried to gain a foothold as a dot-com with a different sound, public name and face. "We thought, 'How can we create something that isn't defined by who it is or what it is about?'" his manager Moe Shalizi.said Forbes in August"We're creating another faceless brand."
It worked: "Alone" went platinum last month, while its video has nearly 140 million views on YouTube. His touring prowess is such that he can book up to three shows in one day. "Demand for Marshmello exceeds its availability," said Steve Gordon, Marshmello's booking agent and co-owner of Circle Talent Agency.
For fans, it probably doesn't make much of a difference if it's Comstock or Marshmello. He's proven he can sell out shows and hit hits: the recent "Wolves," starring Selena Gomez, reached #1 on Billboard's Hot Dance/Electronic Songs. Many already know the link: Comstock's dot-com followers on Instagram regularly comment "Marshmello" or "mello gang," while commenters on Marshmello's social media often reference dot-com.
Perhaps Comstock could protect his career by taking off his mask. As long as Marshmello remains helmeted, he may be able to be replaced by other companies operating under the Marshmello brand.
